About Me

Hi, I'm Eric Scruggs. I have been a financial planner for over a decade, working with individuals and families to help them with all aspects of their financial lives.

Prior to founding Hark Financial Planning, I worked as a senior advisor and financial planner at firms based in Boston, MA and Reston, VA. In those roles, I have been a member of an investment committee, founded and managed a tax practice, advised a Fintech start-up, and, most importantly, worked with clients to achieve their goals.

One of my main motivations for leaving those firms and founding Hark was my belief that there is more to helping clients than just having good technical knowledge and offering investments. Like in legal practice, technical knowledge of the subject matter is critical but is only a foundational part of the work.

The next steps are to understand what the client actually wants to accomplish with your engagement and to tailor your work for the specific matter at hand given the client’s objectives. For me, that means spending a lot of time listening to my clients and asking questions to explore what their real objectives are before just jumping into applying technical skills.

I am a CFP® professional and IRS Enrolled Agent. I have an MBA from The Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC Chapel Hill and a BA from The College of William & Mary.

About our Firm

Hark Financial Planning is an independent Registered Investment Advisor here to help you understand your current financial landscape, develop a plan to keep your money aligned with your values, and free up your time to focus on what matters most to you.

✅ Ongoing Planning: Working together on all aspects of your financial life, including investment management, taxes, and whatever life throws your way. Prices range from $400-$750 per month with a one-time onboarding fee that ranges from $1,000-$3,000, depending on complexity.

For:

- Those looking for partnership and ongoing guidance, rather than a transactional relationship
- Families, business owners, and those with financial complexity and/or frequent life/financial changes
- Those looking to delegate some of their financial action items to free up time

Think of this like getting an in-house general counsel: a resource available to you to provide proactive advice, support, and follow-through on an ongoing basis.

✅ Project-Based Planning: One-time financial planning based on a fixed fee for the agreed-upon project scope. Fixed fee rates range between $3,000 - $6,000, depending on the scope and time frame of the project.

Option to add on financial monitoring with an annual check-in meeting.

For:

- Those wanting to get organized financially and develop a “map” to follow
- Those just starting out who want to establish a solid foundation and forward-looking plan for their finances
- Those comfortable with implementing action items on their own

Think of this like hiring outside counsel: bringing in a resource to address specific problems, answer questions, and assess the current situation.

✅ Hourly-Based Planning: Pay hourly to address some questions or get a second opinion. The hourly rate is $350.

For:
- Those looking for a check-up or second opinion on their financial status
- Those who have specific concerns or topics they want to better understand
- Those comfortable with implementing action items on their own

Think of this like hiring an expert consultant: you have some specific questions that you want to have addressed and to see if you have the facts straight.
